How to Use Claude Cowork for a Small Business: Three First Tasks
11 min read
Claude Cowork for a small business is the part of Claude that carries a multi-step job through to a finished file while you do something else. This lesson explains how it differs from chat, how to hand over a first task, and how to keep it supervised.
Chat answers. Cowork works. Ask chat about a folder of receipts and it tells you how to organize them. Give Cowork the folder and it opens each receipt, builds the spreadsheet, and tells you which three it couldn't read.
What you need
Cowork is on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. It runs in the desktop app on Mac and Windows, on the web, and in the phone apps. Working with folders on your computer needs the desktop app.
To start, open Claude, choose Cowork in the message box, and describe the task. Some Pro and Max accounts now have a newer layout with no Cowork switch, where any conversation can take on a task. If you don't see the option, describe the job and Claude will pick it up.
Checked against Anthropic's help pages in October 2026.
Chat or Cowork?
| Chat | Cowork | |
|---|---|---|
| Good for | Drafting, questions, thinking out loud | Jobs with many steps and a file at the end |
| Works with | What you paste or upload, plus connectors | Folders you grant, a browser, connectors, plugins |
| How long | Seconds | Minutes to an hour |
| Your role | Back and forth | Brief it, check in, review the result |
| Usage | Light | Heavy: each step counts against your plan |
Give it one folder
When a task needs local files, Claude asks which folder it may use. Make a working folder, call it Claude Work, and copy in only what the job needs. Keep it away from Documents and your whole Desktop.
Anthropic's own guidance is blunt here: Claude can take real actions with the files you grant, so don't grant sensitive ones without thought. Payroll records, tax slips and anything with a social insurance number stay out of the working folder.
The three permission modes
Cowork asks before it acts, and you choose how often.
- Manual. It asks each time. Start here.
- Auto. Claude decides when to ask, with safety checks.
- Skip. No checking.
Stay on Manual for your first dozen tasks. The prompts show you what it tends to do and where its judgment differs from yours. Deleting files needs your explicit approval in any mode. Leave Skip alone.
Three first tasks
Pick jobs that are tedious, low-risk, and end in a file you can check.
Receipts into a spreadsheet. Scan or photograph a month of receipts into the working folder.
In this folder are receipt images for [MONTH]. Build one
Excel file with a row per receipt: date, vendor, total,
tax shown, and a category from this list: [YOUR
CATEGORIES]. If you cannot read a value, write UNREADABLE
in that cell. Do not estimate. Finish with a sheet listing
the unreadable receipts by file name.A price update across documents. Your rates changed and six templates still show the old ones.
My rates changed on [DATE]. The new rate card is in
rates-2026-10.xlsx. Go through every Word file in this
folder, find each price, and produce a table of file
name, old price, new price. Do not edit the files yet.
I will approve the table first. The month-end pack. Exports from your bank, your invoicing tool and your card statement go in the folder.
Using the three exports in this folder, prepare a
month-end summary for my accountant: income by customer,
expenses by category, anything that appears in one export
and not the others, and a list of questions. Do not
decide how any item is treated for tax. Mark anything
uncertain UNSURE.That last one is the manual version of what the free Accountant Handoff Pack skill does with more rigour.
How to brief a task
A Cowork brief needs four things a chat prompt can skip: where the inputs are, what the finished file looks like, what to do when something's unclear, and where to stop. "Do not edit yet" and "I will approve first" are the most useful sentences you can write. They turn a one-shot gamble into two short reviews.
What it costs
There's no extra fee, and Cowork is a heavy draw on your plan. A task that opens 140 files uses far more of your allowance than a chat does, and a long job can use up a Pro session. If Cowork becomes a daily habit and you keep hitting the wall, that's the case for a higher tier. Check Settings > Usage after your first few tasks to get a feel for it.
Where this breaks
Cowork is confident and sometimes wrong. It will misread a faded receipt, total a column that included a subtotal row, or decide two vendors are the same company. The safeguards are in the brief: no estimates, UNSURE marks, a stop before any change. Then you spot-check. Pull five rows at random and compare them with the source. If all five hold, the file is probably sound. If one fails, check them all.
It also acts on what it reads. A document in the folder containing instructions aimed at an AI could steer it. Keep the working folder to files you recognize.
For more jobs sized like these, automating business tasks with AI, no code has a longer list.
Try it now
If you're on a paid plan, create the Claude Work folder, copy in last month's receipts or exports, and run the first or third task on Manual. Time it, then time your spot-check. If you're on Free, write the brief anyway and keep it. It's the first task to run if you upgrade.
