Claude Training for Your Business: A One-Hour Team Session
11 min read
Claude training for a business of five takes one hour, a shared Project and a one-page policy. This lesson gives you the agenda, the prep, and a plain guide to the free official courses and certificates.
A login is not training. Hand someone an account and they'll ask it two questions, get two bland answers, and decide it's not for them. What works is an hour where each person leaves having done one real job from their own week, faster than they did it last time.
Before the session
Thirty minutes of your time, the day before.
- Each attendee has their own account and the desktop app installed.
- The training switch is set the way you decided in Chapter 1, on every account.
- One Project exists with instructions and three knowledge files. Customer replies is the best choice, because the whole team understands it.
- Your AI policy fits on one page and is printed. If you don't have one, the Canadian template takes ten minutes, or the AI Usage Policy Writer drafts it by interview.
- Each person brings one task they did by hand this week: an email, a quote, a schedule, a report.
The one-hour agenda
| Minutes | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0 to 10 | The rules. Walk through the one-page policy with examples: this spreadsheet stays out, this version with the names removed is fine. Encouraged uses first, limits second |
| 10 to 25 | One live demo. You do a real job in the shared Project, including the part where Claude gets something wrong and you correct it. Don't rehearse it smooth |
| 25 to 45 | Hands on. Each person runs their own task while you walk around. The rule: paste the real material, use the guard line, fix the draft twice |
| 45 to 55 | What broke. Each person names one thing Claude got wrong and how they caught it |
| 55 to 60 | One job each. Each person names the single task they'll hand to Claude daily this week |
The fourth block does the most work. People trust a tool more once they've watched it fail and watched the check that caught it. A demo where nothing goes wrong teaches them to trust the wrong thing.
The handout
Give each person this, filled in:
OUR CLAUDE BASICS
1. Use the [PROJECT NAME] Project for [JOB]. It already
has our prices, policies and voice.
2. End every request with: "Use only the facts given.
If something is missing, leave a [BLANK]."
3. Stays out of a prompt: [YOUR LIST FROM THE POLICY].
4. Check before sending: every number, date, name
and promise.
5. A professional decides: tax, contracts, HR, safety.
6. Something went wrong? Tell [NAME] the same day.
Telling fast is not punished. The two weeks after
Training fades unless a habit is attached. Three things keep it alive.
A Prompts file in the shared Project. When someone gets a prompt working, they add it. In a month you have a house library. The Prompt Library Builder skill maintains one properly.
A five-minute slot in the weekly meeting. One question: what did you hand to Claude this week, and what came back wrong? Wins spread. So do warnings.
One number. At the two-week mark, ask each person to estimate hours saved per week. It's rough, and it tells you who needs a second session and which jobs to build Projects for next. For a structured plan by role, use the Team Training Plan Builder.
The free official courses
Anthropic publishes its own free training for small businesses at Claude Academy. Three courses were in the small business collection when we looked in October 2026:
| Course | Listed length | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| AI Fluency for Small Businesses | 3.5 hours, 8 lessons | Owners and staff new to AI. Built with PayPal around a four-part framework for working with AI |
| Claude 101 | 2.5 hours, 13 lessons | Anyone who wants the product tour: prompting, Projects, artifacts, skills, connectors |
| Introduction to Claude Cowork | 2.5 hours, 14 lessons | Whoever will run multi-step tasks and plugins |
They cover the product thoroughly, and they're the vendor's view. They say less about which plan you can skip, what the tax skill doesn't do in Canada, or when a free standalone skill beats the plugin. Use them alongside this course: assign Claude 101 to new staff as homework, and keep your one-hour session for your own jobs, files and rules.
Anthropic also runs free half-day workshops for owners. The first tour stops were all in US cities, so check its small business page for current dates before you assume one is near you.
Do you need a Claude certification?
No. Finishing an Anthropic Academy course earns a completion certificate you can share, which is a nice thing for a staff member to have. Anthropic's proctored certification exams are a separate, paid program aimed at people who build and sell Claude solutions, and none of them is about running a small business with it. What a client or an insurer will care about is your written policy and whether your team follows it.
Where this breaks
One session doesn't change habits by itself, and a team that was pushed into it will nod and go back to the old way. Start with the two people who are curious. Let their results recruit the rest.
Skills also fade when the tool changes, and Claude changes monthly. Put a 20-minute refresher on the calendar each quarter: what's new, what moved, which of our prompts stopped working.
Where to go from here
You now have Claude set up, taught, connected and shared. Two directions from this point. To make your best prompts permanent and portable, take AI Skills for Small Business. To chain it all into a weekly operating rhythm, The AI-Operated Business is the advanced course. And if you'd like a second pair of eyes on where AI would pay off most in your shop, that's what an AI opportunity audit is for.
Try it now
Book the hour. Put it on the calendar for next week, send the "bring one task" note today, and print the policy. It takes less time than the next software demo you'll sit through, and it's the one that changes Monday.
